Scholarships for minorities are a valid need for this country. Statistics show the quality of education for minorities is unequal to the education a more privileged white person would receive from society. We would like to believe that our society is racism and sexism but it is still a class struggle for those to attend college that have brilliant minds but are caught in the web of social inequality. Not everyone is privileged enough to come from a wealthy family that can easily afford private schools for their children and expose their children to the best education they can have. Minorities start out socially disadvantaged first plagued with the issue of generational poverty and inner city schools as they easily outnumber the teachers. The teachers themselves only attempt to instruct them to the state test standards so critical material that would prepare these minorities for college is pushed to the side. The quality of their education is sacrificed because there are no alternatives offered. There are often many home struggles minority groups have to deal with because of generational poverty brought on by poor living wages and teen pregnancy.

For students with ambitious dreams and the potential to become anything they dream of, the only obstacle standing in there way may be funding and money. Aside from filing the FAFSA and getting government grants and loans, students can shave money off of student tuition and college expenses by seeking out local scholarship funds and grants.

Local businesses may offer a scholarship to one or more graduating senior. Typically, these college scholarship funds range from $500 to $1,000. Applying for this free money may come with a few guidelines, restrictions and a little bit of work. Many businesses will require that a student be enrolled full time at a college or university. Furthermore, the gifted money may only be eligible to those students with a grade point average (GPA) over a certain benchmark. These GPA requirements will vary by association, business or fund. Many programs also ask each applicant to fill out a questionnaire. These questionnaires usually ask about a student’s extracurricular involvement and any volunteer work. Some school scholarship funds may also ask applicants to write an essay explaining why they should be chosen, what their goals are or how they plan on using their education to better society. Essay questions will vary greatly depending on the organization and kind of educational program the money may be offered towards.

Tuition for some online college classes and degree programs can be paid in monthly, no-interest installments.

Distance college classes and degree programs require little more than a computer with Internet access. Students can participate in studies on their own time, at their own place, and they can continue working relatively uninterrupted to help pay for tuition. While some online schools have this year reportedly increased tuition as much as 8 percent, at least one online institution announced that it has kept tuition costs steady, with an academic year’s worth of full-time undergraduate studies totaling less than $6,000. The Obama administration has recently expanded and revamped financial aid offerings and tax credits that might be applied to most forms of continued education.
